Waving Flags and Whimsical Thoughts: A Colorful Tribute

Flags at the field of honor in Georgetown Texas presented in a whimsical painterly style
“Flags,” Field of Honor, Georgetown, Texas, by Carol Schiraldi

Picture this: you’re standing in the Georgetown Field of Honor, surrounded by a sea of vibrant American flags, each one waving like it just won the lottery. The sun is setting, casting a warm glow that makes everything look like it’s been dipped in honey. It’s a sight that could make even the most stoic of hearts swell with a sense of patriotism—or at least inspire a sudden craving for a hot dog.

Now, let’s talk about these flags. They’re not just pieces of fabric; they’re like the overzealous cheerleaders of the outdoor world, shouting, “Look at me! I’m red, white, and blue, and I’m here to represent!” Honestly, who doesn’t love a good flag? They’re the ultimate conversation starters. “Oh, you like flags? Well, have you seen the one that’s been waving in my front yard since 2001? It’s practically a family member at this point.”

Here in Central Texas, we love our flag and I was lucky enough to visit the Field of Honor this past Veterans Day to take some photographs. It was quite an impressive sight, watching the sun set in the sky behind the flags flapping in the slight breeze. I walked among the rows of flags with respect, wanting the honor our flag but also to capture the image of our flag in a creative, unique way.

As I worked on this scene, I couldn’t help but think about the stories each flag could tell. Maybe one was planted by a veteran who wanted to honor their service. Another could belong to a family who just moved in and thought, “What better way to fit in than to wave our flag high?” And then there’s that one flag that’s seen better days, frayed and faded, but still standing strong—kind of like me after a long week of adulting.

But let’s not forget the humor in it all. Have you ever tried to fold a flag? It’s like trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube while blindfolded. You think you’ve got it, and then—bam!—it’s a crumpled mess. I swear, every time I try I feel like calling in the Navy SEALS, the SWAT team, and even the older WWII vets to help! Yet, there’s something beautiful about the chaos of it all. Just like life, right? Sometimes you just have to embrace the wrinkles and let the wind do its thing.

Oh, and speaking of embracing things, I’m thrilled to share that I was recently named one of the Singulart Paris 50 American artists to follow! You can checkout my work, an exploding cityscape, that is included in the curated collection. Who knew my photo obsession would lead to such recognition? After signing with Singulart last year, it’s been a wild ride. It’s like winning the lottery, but instead of cash, I get to keep creating and sharing my quirky perspective with all of you.

So, as you gaze upon this one, let it remind you of the vibrant stories that surround us, the laughter we share, and the moments that make us feel alive. Whether you’re a flag enthusiast or just someone who appreciates a good landscape, I hope this piece brings a smile to your face and maybe even a chuckle or two. After all, life’s too short to take everything seriously—especially when there are flags involved!

Until next time…
