Being a photographer, I must confess I am so over transportation. You could strap me into the back of anything from a rickshaw to a rocketship and I will fall asleep with nary a raised eyebrow. It’s just part of what we do. Constantly moving from one destination to another, transportation is part of the job. Sure, we like to lean out the back and take photos when we can but, typically anyway transportation is viewed as a kind of necessary evil (of sorts.)
Fast forward to Cuba. In Old Havana, the classic cars are kings! We love them so. Driving in the back of one of these is not boring, let me tell you. No, it’s a ton of fun. There’s nothing like hitting the streets of Havana in a 50’s classic, roof down, wind in your hair, horn tooting away. Somehow, I never much liked old cars in the ‘States when they were new but magically, in Old Havana, they get transformed. It’s fun to be a part of it. It’s amazing to see how they keep them running too. The history books are filled with all kinds of stories, the way folks have handcrafted parts, the repairs they make on back alley streets, and the clever tricks they pull to keep it all humming along. It’s mind blowing that these cars have survived for so long, traveled so far, and still look amazing. It stands in sharp contrast to our modern cars which sometimes seem to lack a lot of soul.
I thought I would share some of my favorite cars from Old Havana. These are just a couple off the top of the pile. There are more to come, for sure, but I thought I would share a few in honor of the golden oldies you can find in Old Havana.
Until next time…
