I’m back! Did you miss me? Now, I wasn’t gone long, but it was a real journey. This time around, I headed off for some genuinely good times in Old Havana. This was my first visit to Cuba and I have to say I love the place. A little French Quarter, a little bit abandoned buildings, a lot of street, some old cars, fantastic food, and wonderful company. What more could I ask for, right? Havana is such a wonderful place. It’s a photographer’s paradise. This was my first visit but I have to say I would go back again given the opportunity. What a trip! I still can’t believe I made it to Cuba and got to photograph in Old Havana.
The first shots I’m sharing are pretty much unedited iPhone shots. For this trip, I shot both my iPhone and my Canon DSLR camera. Shooting both cameras really gave me some insights into the strengths and weaknesses of each system. Now, I don’t want to share too much, as I’m sure you’ll grow sick of seeing images from Havana soon enough, but this is just a small taste. The cobblestone streets of Old Havana will always be in my heart. It really was a magical place for photographs. I have a lot of editing to do now that I am home.
Not sure yet what I will do with my images from Havana right now. I was thinking of working on my next book of travel images, and possibly including some images from Havana in with that set, but now I am rethinking this, as Havana is really a body of work all by itself. Over time I will decide what to do here. For now, I am unpacking and getting settled back into home life. The first load of laundry has been put up and I’ve gone to the grocery store to stock up. I’m fighting a bit of a head cold so tending to this as well. The usual return related items from travels as it were.
Even though I am back after my short spell, I have to say, part of my heart is still in Havana. Those cobbled streets, those broken down buildings, those wonderful people, the old cars, the cool drinks, and just taking it all in. What a place Havana is.
The flag mural image was taken right outside of my hotel, a charming bed and breakfast with a private courtyard and balcony overlooking the heart of Old Havana. Since the climate is mild, Havana has a lot of outdoor cafe style seating. You usually don’t have to walk very far to find outdoor dining options and rooftop decks are aplenty.
Nighttime in Old Havana is really special too. The colors of the buildings and the lights, coupled with the narrow streets and old cars can make for wonderful night images. On this trip, I used a lot my iPhone 15 Pro Max night mode, as it really does a good job with the night images (and is a lot easier to do versus using my tripod and DSLR camera system.)
Look for more images from Old Havana soon.
Until next time…
