Ah, Kyoto! The city where every corner feels like a postcard and every moment is a chance to marvel at nature’s handiwork. In this delightful collection, we explore three enchanting scenes that capture the essence of this Japanese gem, each whispering tales of tranquility and beauty.
I was lucky enough to spend some quality autumn time in Kyoto. While it’s not the cherry blossom season that everyone covets, it’s a great time to visit, as there are fewer crowds and the weather is mild. The Japanese maple trees turning a wonderful shade of red doesn’t hurt things here either. It’s like Kyoto puts on its finest red beret, just for you.
In this first image, let’s wander into a bamboo forest that feels like you’re stepping into a dream. Imagine tall, slender stalks swaying in the breeze, almost as if they’re engaged in a slow-motion dance-off. The sunlight filters through the leaves, creating a dazzling display of greens and golds that could make even the most jaded city dweller feel a twinge of envy. It’s nature’s way of saying, “Hey, remember to breathe!” Seriously, if you’re not feeling zen after a stroll through here, you might want to check your pulse.
During my visit, I ventured into several old growth bamboo forests. They are really something to behold. The bamboo towers over your head. It almost feels like it’s reaching for the sky itself. Because of the towering old growth bamboo, the forest is dark. There’s a darkness afoot, although in spots the sun can filter its way down to the forest floor. It’s a crazy feeling that, with shafts of light reaching you.
As the wind blows, the bamboo creaks. The older the bamboo, the less it sways in the wind, but the more resonate the sounds. The forest makes sounds too. It’s wild but somehow feels so natural.
After photographing the old growth forest several times and in a few different ways, I decided to experiment and play a bit. I started moving my camera while the image was taking. Thanks to the daytime darkness, I was able to do that. Wanting to convey a sense of motion, almost like you were running through the forest, I made the bamboo come to life.

Next, we find ourselves at a traditional Japanese garden gate. This isn’t just any gate; it’s a portal to serenity. The wooden structure, adorned with intricate details, stands proudly against a backdrop of meticulously raked gravel and lush greenery. It’s the kind of place where you half-expect a wise old turtle to pop out and offer life advice. If you’re not contemplating your life choices while standing here, are you even doing it right?
You’ve probably heard or even told stories about finding Zen. Well, this place actually is Zen. It’s an old Zen garden from Kyoto, complete with raked gravel and stepping stones that lead out into a full Zen landscape. The rocks have all been deliberately placed, please don’t trip!

Finally, we arrive at a picturesque lakeside scene, where trees flaunt their autumn attire like they’re strutting down a runway. The vibrant hues of orange and red remind us that change can be beautiful, even if it means saying goodbye to summer. The reflection in the water? Pure poetry. It’s as if the lake is trying to capture the essence of the trees, but let’s be honest, it’s probably just showing off.
So, what do these images have in common? They all invite us to pause, reflect, and maybe even chuckle at the absurdity of our busy lives. Nature has a way of grounding us, reminding us that sometimes, the best art is simply found in the world around us.
Next time you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a moment to step outside. Who knows? You might just find your own bamboo forest waiting to inspire you.
Until next time…
