Of Bluebonnets and Berets: The Scenic, Silly, Soul-Soothing Forest

Bluebonnets, Oh, Bluebonnets, Wherefore Art Thou?

Here we have the great outdoors, the forest or what passes for one in Texas. I set out on my annual noble quest for bluebonnets, you know the bluebonnets, right? Those elusive little floral beauties that come out in bulk when you don’t have your camera but then seem to play hide-and-seek when you do. This year, why, they just played “hide,” although, come to think of it, maybe they just were all that good at hide-and-seek and we just never found any of them.

So, picture it. I go out looking for the bluebonnets because, well, that’s what every photographer does in Central Texas in the springtime. Coming up short, I start to pack up and go home, figure I’ll take my chances with a still life, but then I stumble upon this place. A forest near my home that was practically begging for a photoshoot. Talk about a plot twist!

There’s Drama in Those Trees

This place wasn’t just an ordinary forest. It felt like some kind of magical realm where the trees stand like ancient sentinels, whispering secrets to anyone brave enough to listen. You know, the kind of place where you can almost hear the trees gossiping about the squirrels and their questionable fashion choices. Seriously, have you seen a squirrel in a beret and sunglasses? You laugh but, hey, it could happen and, why if it did, you just know it would happen in a place like this.

As I wandered through this lush greenery, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of tranquility wash over me. It’s like nature’s way of saying, “Hey you, dear Human, you’re actually organic too. Take a break from your screen and breathe in some of this fresh air. It’ll be good for you, I promise” And let me tell you, nothing beats the smell of damp earth and evergreen needles unless, of course, you’re talking about freshly baked cookies. A little less organic there, sure, although quite the tasty treat, but I digress.

The Search for Cookies And Impeccably Dressed Squirrels

With cookies well out of the picture, I wandered deeper into this lush greenery. It made me feel like I’d stepped into a scene from some long lost nature documentary. All I needed was maybe some dramatic narration (somebody has to announce the squirrels in berets and sunglasses here now, don’t they?) and maybe the risk of being chased by a bear. The trees stood their ground, all tall and proud, adding to the drama. I half-expected them to start reciting Shakespeare or something.

Forest in the Key of…Wait, What Was That?

And the sounds! Oh, the sounds! The gentle rustle of leaves, the distant chirping of birds, and the occasional snap of a twig underfoot created a symphony that made me feel like I was in a serene sanctuary. Was that a rattlesnake we just heard? Gosh, I hope not! I was just a humble audience member, trying not to trip over my own feet, and not step on the snake while soaking in all of this nature.

Lost in Austin

But let’s be real: as peaceful as it was, the forest can also be a bit of a maze. One minute, I was admiring a particularly majestic tree, and the next, I was questioning the meaning of life as I realized I’d wandered off the beaten path and didn’t know which way the cookies were.

“Is that a bear? A rattlesnake? Or just my imagination running wild?” Spoiler alert: it was just a particularly large rock that I nearly tripped over, but hey, it’s all part of the adventure, right? Welcome to nature! Oh, so sorry, somebody forgot to tell you it’s a contact sport.

Forest Therapy: Bring Your Own Snacks

So, if you ever find yourself feeling overwhelmed by the mayhem of life, I highly recommend a little forest therapy. Just remember to wear comfortable shoes, bring some snacks (because let’s be real, hiking is hard work), and keep an eye out for any rogue squirrels in berets and sunglasses. You never know what kind of magic awaits you in the embrace of the trees.

Now, go forth and explore! The forest is calling, and it’s way more interesting than scrolling through your social media feed. Trust me, your soul will thank you.

Until next time…
