The Smiling Sage: A Golden Reflection for the New Year

Golden Buddha is a smiling sage from a Buddhist temple in Guilin, China by Carol Schiraldi of Carols Little World.
“Golden Buddha,” Guilin, China, by Carol Schiraldi

Picture this: you’re wandering through a temple in China, the air thick with incense and the faint sound of chanting in the background. Suddenly, you turn a corner and there he is—a statue of Buddha, grinning like he just heard the best joke ever. Seriously, this guy’s smile could light up a room, or at least a small temple.

This isn’t just any Buddha; this is the golden, ornate, and fabulously rotund version that seems to say, “Life’s too short to take seriously!” With his red backdrop, he’s practically a walking (or sitting) advertisement for joy. I mean, if I had a dollar for every time I’ve tried to channel that level of happiness, I’d probably be able to afford a life-sized replica of him.

Now, let’s talk about that smile. It’s the kind of smile that makes you wonder if he’s just heard the latest gossip about the other deities. “Did you hear what Zeus did this time?” I can almost hear him chuckling. And let’s be real, who wouldn’t want to hang out with a guy who radiates that much positivity?

But here’s the kicker: while we’re all busy scrolling through our phones, trying to find the perfect meme to express our feelings, this Buddha is just chilling, reminding us that sometimes, the best thing we can do is laugh. It’s like he’s saying, “Hey, lighten up! You’re not getting out of this life alive anyway!”

And let’s not forget the details—the ornate flames behind him, the way the light catches the gold, making him look like he’s just stepped off a throne made of sunshine. It’s almost too much to handle. I mean, if I had that kind of bling, I’d be strutting around like I owned the place too.

On this day, the celebration of the Chinese New Year, I thought I would share this happy Buddha to help bring a little good cheer into the world. Today marks the start of the Year of the Wood Snake. As we usher out the year of the mythical Wood Dragon, the Wood Snake reminds us that we can all be reborn, we all have new opportunities for growth and change, even if that change come in the form of putting on a happy face.

So, the next time you find yourself in a funk, just think of this smiling Buddha. Channel that energy. Maybe even practice your own version of his grin in the mirror. Who knows? You might just brighten someone’s day—or at least make yourself giggle a little.

In a world that often feels heavy, let’s take a page from Buddha’s book: smile, laugh, and don’t forget to enjoy the ride. After all, life’s a journey, not a destination—unless that destination is a temple filled with golden statues and good vibes. Now that’s a place I’d like to visit!

Happy New Year!

Until next time…

He’s a keeper, isn’t he? I love them all too. Sometimes so different and unique but each beautiful in its own way.
