Chasing Autumn’s Quiet Magic: A Soulful Day of Photography in My Borrowed Garden

Lone lily in the Borrowed Garden from an autumn visit

The other day, the light was just perfect for photography. I wanted to go out for a while, thinking it might be nice to just get outside for a little bit, and figuring I would check out the autumn happenings over at the Borrowed Garden (also known as the beautiful Hill Country Water Gardens and Nursery.) So, I monitored the weather and waited for just the right day.

Clouds in My Borrowed Garden

As luck would have it, we had a cloudy day. It was super cloudy, the kind of day where it looks like the skies might open up and rain on you at any second. For me, this is one of my favorite days for shooting. It can make the colors all deep and there are fewer shadows. Everybody always thinks bright sunny days make for the best photos but, honestly, the worse the weather, usually, the better the images.

So, I packed up my camera and headed over to the Borrowed Garden for a spell. They didn’t have many water lilies left, but they had places on lily in each of the raised water beds they have there. This made it nice to get the lone lily type of image you see here. I walked around and enjoyed the clouds with the nice, soft light.

Autumn goodness, some leaves and plants in the Borrowed Garden taken during an autumn visit

Ever find yourself lost in the beauty of nature, where every petal and leaf seems to tell a story? That’s exactly what I tried to share with this mini collection of images: “Autumn Goodness,” “Lone Lily,” and “Palm Heart.”

Each image invites you to pause, reflect, and appreciate the intricate details that often go unnoticed. These were taken on a late autumn visit to the water gardens, a place I call my Borrowed Garden, all around the same time, in the nice cloudy light.

Autumn Goodness

Autumn Goodness as I call it, captures the essence of fall in a delicate dance of soft colors. It’s like a warm hug from nature, reminding us to savor those quiet moments. Can you feel the nostalgia? Each bloom seems to whisper secrets of the season, urging you to slow down and appreciate the beauty around you. What stories do you think these leaves could tell if they had a voice?

Then there’s Lone Lily. a stunning pink lotus that stands tall amidst the murky waters of a serene pond. Isn’t it fascinating how something so delicate can thrive in such an unexpected environment? This piece invites you to reflect on resilience and beauty, encouraging you to find tranquility in your own life. If this flower could speak, what wisdom would it share?

Palm Heart

Finally, Palm Heart takes you on a close-up exploration of a palm tree’s intricate textures. The weave of the palms going in and out of the image plane creates a captivating dance, revealing nature’s own abstract art. It’s a reminder that wonder can be found in the most unexpected places. What stories do you think this palm could tell if it had the chance?

As you check out these artworks, consider how they resonate with your own experiences. Nature has a way of connecting us all, doesn’t it? So, what do you think? Which piece speaks to you the most, and what stories do you carry with you? Let’s celebrate the beauty of the world together!

I love going back to the Borrowed Garden and like to visit all times of the year. Autumn in the Texas Hill Country, while it does not give us the royal splendor of the New England fall season, it does give us subtle hints that the season is changing. The soft colors, highlighted texture, cloudy days, and cooler temperatures remind us that it’s not always summertime.

I hope you enjoy the Borrowed Garden as much as I love to visit.

Until next time…
