I (Don’t) Go Chasing Waterfalls

OK, I admit it. Time for me to ‘fess up! I’m not a waterfall girl. Now, I know waterfalls are *very* popular with photographers. When I say, “very popular,” I mean they are usually top sellers when it comes to prints and, maybe because of that, you can usually find a pack of photographers camped out at the bottom of most waterfalls shooting away. Everybody just loves waterfalls, right? I mean, come on, who does not like the soothing sounds of a waterfall? Photographers love them because they grant us an opportunity to get our tripods, stop down our lenses, and make that water look like glass. BAM! Get a great shot just like that. Who does not like a great shot, right? They make it easy for us.

I don’t know what it is, I just find waterfalls a bit…boring. OK, there I said it. They are kind of dull to me. After one or two, they all start to look alike. They just sort of run together in my mind (excuse the pun there, please.) Where’s the fun in that?

Fast forward to Iceland. Iceland is a land with more waterfalls with people. Iceland is a land of glaciers, trolls who live in little grass covered houses, and waterfalls galore. They are just everywhere in Iceland. Loath as I am to admit it, I shot some waterfalls while in Iceland. Yes, I shot the waterfalls there, I admit it. They were just so spectacular, I had to get at least one or two for prosperity sake. So, shoot the waterfalls I did. Bring on the Icelandic waterfalls, I say!
While I did shoot some of the waterfalls there, I challenged myself to do something different or, at least, try to do something different. I tried to think about how an artist might work with a waterfall, rather than the typical photographer, tripod in tow, water like glass. I tried to get something different, maybe something unusual.
Did I succeed? Well, now you can be the judge. Here is one of my waterfalls from Iceland.
I don’t know if it’s really different, artsy, unusual, not what you might expect, but I do know this. I tried to do something different and that was a worthy effort, even if it did not pan out results. I also know that I probably won’t go chasing waterfalls again anytime soon. I mean, after having shot them in Iceland, a place where they are fantastic, it would be a bit of a let down to, say, find one in Oklahoma or some such thing. (Apologies to folks in Oklahoma who, I’m sure, have excellent waterfalls. Not Icelandic waterfalls, but excellent nevertheless.)
No, I won’t go chasing waterfalls again anytime soon, but you can enjoy this one. This is from somewhere in rural Iceland.
Until next time…
