This is one from the weekend-it’s an encaustic piece I made by placing a photo on panel and then glazing with encaustic medium.
I feel like I almost have the hang of doing encaustics as a glazing, at least as far as the photography is concerned. Now, if I had to do this with a charcoal sketch? That would be another story. Eeek! I’m so afraid. (Yeah, yeah, I know, live on the edge…I have to learn how to live on the edge!)
It’s kind of fun being in this learning stage though. I’m trying out new things, trying to make things work, experimenting. Every day or every attempt out in the studio brings yet another, “let me see if this will work” kind of discovery. I have to say that’s been a bit fun. More than anything else, the thing I’m growing to love about encaustics is that sense of discovery. “Let’s see how this will look in wax,” goes a long way to satisfying my artistic appetite. I’m learning, yes, but I’m experimenting, and, frankly, that’s where all the fun is.
Now that I’ve said that, of course, my next painting session will probably result in me blowing up my studio. (But, hey, for now, at least, I’m having some fun.)
Until next time…

Thanks, Mythopolis!
Sometimes it feels like I cannot do a thing with wax and other times I feel like I'm on top of the world. Go figure.
